1. ZAGREB – MALTA – VALLETTA

Meeting of passengers with the tour leader at Zagreb Airport 2 hours before the plane’s departure. Check-in and departure on the Ryanair flight to Malta. Upon arrival, welcome by a representative of the local agent and transfer to a half-day tour of Malta’s capital accompanied by a local guide who will lead us through the streets of Valletta, the island’s capital. We visit the richly decorated St. John’s Co-Cathedral, whose magnificent Baroque interior features a Caravaggio painting displayed in the oratory. We also visit the Church Museum with a beautiful collection of Flemish tapestries. We then continue an interesting walk through the city center where you will see the most important historical buildings and the courtyard of the Grand Master’s Palace, followed by the Upper Barracca Gardens, built on top of the defensive walls surrounding this magnificent city. They were arranged by the Knights of St. John as a viewpoint with a beautiful view of the Grand Harbour and the fortified Three Cities. Free time in the center for souvenir shopping, coffee, lunch. After the tour, we go to the hotel in St. Paul’s Bay, check-in and accommodation, and the rest of the day and evening are free. Overnight.

*Note: The travel program is subject to change depending on the airline’s flight schedule on specific travel dates

2. MALTA – optional excursion DISCOVER THE ISLAND OF GOZO

Breakfast. Free time for personal activities. Today we propose a full-day optional excursion to the island of Gozo, one of the two inhabited islands in the Maltese archipelago, connected to Malta by frequent ferry services (about half an hour crossing). Immediately upon docking in the beautiful Mgarr harbor on Gozo you will notice that, despite historical and developmental similarities with Malta, Gozo is very different. Gozo is greener than Malta and, with its hilly terrain and picturesque landscapes, invites exploration. This is followed by a bus tour of the most famous locations: a visit to the island’s capital Victoria, Dwejra Bay and the natural wonder Inland Sea, the lagoon that is also the lowest point of Gozo, and the steep cliffs at Xlendi Bay. Free time for lunch and shopping at your own expense. Since Gozo is known for local wool and lace handicrafts, as well as honey and cheese, we will also visit typical stalls where you can browse or purchase. Return by ferry to Malta and transfer to the hotel. Overnight.

3. MALTA – optional excursion BLUE GROTTO AND MARSAXLOKK

Breakfast. Free day for personal programs. We suggest a full-day optional excursion to the southern part of Malta. We begin with a visit to the Blue Grotto, a Maltese jewel with stunningly blue waters. If weather permits, we will take a boat tour around the caves and grottoes (boat ride for an additional fee payable locally). Then we will visit one of the Maltese megalithic temples. These are groups of prehistoric megalithic monuments on Malta, seven of which were inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List in Europe in 1980 as "the oldest standalone structures in the world." They resulted from local innovations in the process of cultural evolution, leading to the period known as the Ġgantija culture (extra fee for entrance ticket payable locally). To end the day we go to the peaceful Marsaxlokk Bay with Malta’s most important fishing village of the same name. You will see numerous luzzus, typical Maltese fishing boats moored throughout the bay, their traditional bright colors echoed in the stalls of the popular market along the promenade. Return to the hotel. Free time. Overnight.

4. MALTA – optional excursion HARBOUR CRUISE AND THE THREE CITIES

Breakfast at the hotel, free for rest and walks, or join a full-day optional boat excursion on the Grand Harbour. Join us on a boat cruise through one of Malta’s most attractive sights, the Grand Harbour. This tour takes you between the fortresses and docks of Valletta, through a maze of bays and quays with unforgettable views of Malta’s capital and the fortifications of the Three Cities. From the sea you will see the Grand Harbour, one of the most beautiful, famous and largest natural harbors in the world, a reason many conquerors coveted Malta, and now a favorite photographic subject with countless historical and technical points of interest. Enjoy a 1.5-hour cruise around the harbor encompassing Valletta, Sliema and the Three Cities. After this incredible experience, we will drive to the famous Three Cities, which can rightly be proud as the cradle of Maltese history, since Vittoriosa, Senglea and Cospicua have provided homes and refuge to almost every nation that settled on the islands. Their harbor bays have been used since Phoenician times: the docks have always provided the livelihood necessary for the local population, but have also left them vulnerable during times of war. As the first home of the Knights of St. John, the palaces, churches, fortifications and bastions of the Three Cities are far older than those in Valletta. Local communities here celebrate feasts and festivals like nowhere else on the islands. It may be possible to visit the Inquisitor’s Palace in Vittoriosa (entrance ticket payable locally). Free time for lunch. Return to the hotel. Free time. Overnight.

5. MALTA – optional excursion MDINA, RABAT AND DINGLI CLIFFS – ZAGREB

Breakfast. Check-out from the hotel. Free time for personal programs. We propose a half-day optional excursion to Mdina. Board the bus and drive through rural Malta to the medieval city of Mdina and its suburb Rabat. With its powerful walls and shaded streets, this city justifies the name "Silent City" in contrast to modern and dynamic Valletta. The tour begins in front of Mdina’s main gate, and entering through the fortified walls reveals stunning palaces that once belonged to the Maltese nobility. During a walk through the picturesque streets you will learn interesting stories from Malta’s distant past and climb the city walls from where there is a beautiful panoramic view over the entire island. This is followed by a visit to St. Paul’s Cathedral (entrance fee not included). In Rabat are the famous St. Paul’s Catacombs (entrance fee payable locally) and the Catacombs of St. Agatha. These catacombs were used in Roman times for burying the dead because, according to Roman custom, it was not hygienic to bury the dead within the City. The excursion continues with a drive to the Dingli Cliffs overlooking the islet of Filfla. After the excursion, return to the hotel and free time until transfer. Departure by bus from the hotel to the airport and flight to Zagreb.

*Note: The travel program is subject to change depending on the airline’s flight schedule on specific travel dates

USEFUL INFORMATION - MALTA

Malta should be visited because nowhere in such a small area will you get more than here. Malta is an ideal destination because it has the sea, good beaches, rich cultural heritage and architecture that will delight you, a wide selection of different restaurants (from world-famous fast-food chains, Italian, Asian or Turkish restaurants, to excellent confectioneries) and nightlife venues. Everything is relatively close, the level of safety is exceptionally high, and the transport network is excellently organized so you can easily get from one end of the island to the other. Traffic on the island is busy, and driving is on the left due to British historical influence. The main means of public transport are buses, which cheaply and frequently connect various parts of Malta and Gozo.

The Republic of Malta is an island state in the Mediterranean Sea consisting of several islands and islets, of which only three are inhabited: Malta, Gozo and Comino. The country has fewer than half a million inhabitants, but considering its area it is one of the most densely populated countries in the world.

Malta is a strongly Catholic country, and Christianity was brought to the islands by the apostle St. Paul who was shipwrecked here. There are around 360 churches in the country, practically one church per 1,000 inhabitants. Parish churches are the geographical and cultural center of each settlement in the country. Every place celebrates its patron saint’s day with musical parades, processions, special masses, fireworks and other forms of celebration. We suggest you attend one of the many "festas" held in towns and villages in the evenings, as here you will best experience the Maltese, who despite many influences have managed to preserve their customs, language and distinctive temperament.

The official name given to Malta’s capital by the Order of St. John was "Humillima Civitas Valletta" – the city dedicated to humility. However, due to its impressive walls, bastions, palaces and Baroque buildings, as well as the beautiful St. John’s Cathedral which houses one of Caravaggio’s most famous paintings, the city became known as "Superbissima" – Most Superb, among the ruling houses of Europe. In Maltese it is commonly called "Il-Belt" which simply means The City. Today Valletta is entirely protected by UNESCO.

Northwest of the island of Malta lies the green island of Gozo, with an area of 67 km², famous for numerous attractions such as the Ġgantija temples from the Neolithic period, one of the oldest man-made structures still standing. Another important archaeological site on Gozo is the Brochtorff Circle, also from the Neolithic period, and according to legend this island is actually Ogygia from Homer’s famous epic the Odyssey.

Gozo translates as joy, and it will particularly delight you with its "Azure Window", a natural arch through which you can view the azure blue sea.

The island of Comino got its name from the cumin that grew there. Today this island with only four permanent residents is known for its peace and isolation. A single policeman and a single priest, who come from nearby Gozo, serve the local population and tourists. The island is a bird reserve and a protected natural area. The coastline mostly consists of cliffs, and there are many deep caves that pirates used in the Middle Ages to attack ships between Malta and Gozo. During the time of the Knights, the island was used for hunting and recreation, and as a prison by the Order. Today many tourists enjoy the crystal-clear sea of the "Blue Lagoon" daily.

Malta is a destination where many world films and TV series have been shot, and the London Times called Malta the "Mediterranean film Hollywood." The Maltese islands – Malta, Gozo and Comino – have been home to Hollywood blockbusters such as Gladiator, Munich and The Count of Monte Cristo, as well as parts of the popular series "Game of Thrones", and Popeye’s Village became a popular tourist attraction after the musical was filmed on Malta.

Main tourist centers:

St. Julian’s:

The largest and most visited tourist center in Malta, featuring interesting buildings and palaces from the British period, bays, sandy and rocky beaches, and a wealth of tourist amenities. A very lively nightlife takes place in the part of town called Paceville, where you will find countless clubs, a variety of offerings, and diverse music – something for every taste. St. Julian’s offers visitors everything one could wish for on holiday, and the capital Valletta, a UNESCO World Heritage site, is only about 10 km away and connected by local bus lines several times a day.

Sliema:

The picturesque tourist town of Sliema is 7 km from the capital Valletta and is connected by local bus lines. Sliema has a beautiful, popular 3 km long seafront promenade surrounded by buildings and palaces from the British era, great shopping, cafes, restaurants and sports facilities. If you want to refresh and swim in the sea, you can descend the steps from the promenade to reach a maintained rocky beach. A walk along the sea quickly leads to the neighboring town of St. Julian’s.

Bugibba:

A tourist center in the north of Malta, in St. Paul’s Bay. The seafront promenade connects Bugibba with nearby Qawra, and it has a nice central square with many tourist facilities, restaurants, cafes, shops and souvenir stores. It is somewhat calmer than lively Sliema and St. Julian’s, but in the summer months it still offers excellent entertainment for its guests. There are several nice beaches and bays. The capital Valletta is approximately 17 km away, and buses to Valletta and other interesting places on the island run several times a day.

Qawra:

The quiet resort of Qawra, with views of St. Paul’s islet, is connected to neighboring Bugibba. It is not far to walk along the promenade to Bugibba’s central square where bars, cafes and restaurants are located. In Qawra you will also find many interesting tourist amenities, the National Aquarium in front of which a sandy beach has been arranged, a collection of classic cars, ... and by local bus you can travel to Valletta, about 17 km away, as well as to other Maltese locations.
