Overview

Salzburg enchants with its magical blend of Baroque architecture, a historic old town and a musical heritage that is the home of Mozart. The city, listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, stretches along the Salzach River and delights with charming streets, the imposing Hohensalzburg Fortress and numerous museums and churches. During Advent Salzburg shines in festive light – city squares and streets fill with Christmas markets, a rich offering of local delicacies and handcrafted goods. A special atmosphere is created by the traditional Krampus and Perchtenlauf, which, by preserving ancient customs, add a touch of mystique and adrenaline. Salzburg is thus the perfect destination for those who want to combine culture, tradition and a festive atmosphere.

Day 1 LJUBLJANA – SALZBURG - LJUBLJANA.

Early in the morning we meet at the agreed place and set off for Salzburg – the city of Baroque palaces, musical legacy and a rich Advent tradition. After arrival we begin with a tour of the beautiful historic city center, which is listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. We stroll along the elegant Getreidegasse, past Mozart's birthplace, Residenzplatz, the cathedral Dom zu Salzburg and the Archbishop's Palace, all the way to the picturesque Mirabell Garden, which retains its special charm even in winter. During the walk we feel the harmonious intertwining of history, culture and festive atmosphere that turns the city into a true winter fairy tale at this time. This is followed by free time to visit the Advent markets, which take place at several locations – on Kapitelplatz, Domplatz and around Residenzplatz. At the richly decorated stalls you will find handmade souvenirs, artistic products, festive decorations and fragrant treats. During this time you may also independently visit Hohensalzburg Fortress or one of the city's galleries and museums. If desired and at your own expense, in the afternoon we can go to the Gnigl district of the city, where the traditional Krampuslauf is expected to take place at around 18:30 – one of the largest in Austria. Each year it is attended by about 900 performers from various clubs who, with terrifying masks, fire and loud bells, revive an ancient Alpine tradition. Krampus is a mythological creature from folk tradition, the companion of St. Nicholas, who with his frightening appearance for long centuries scared naughty children and symbolically represented the dark side of winter. In the evening we gather and, with warm impressions, head home, arriving there in the late evening. (bus)
